Lucian Leape Institute Plenary. The Roots of the Patient Safety Movement: Lessons to Shape the Future of Health Care
Keynote One Description:
The leading advocate for high-quality health care, Dr. Don Berwick is known for his unwavering commitment to improving health and healthcare for all. Dr. Berwick knows that there is tremendous unrealized potential in American medicine that can be achieved through innovation, continuous improvement, smart policies and strong leadership, but getting there is not easy. Through the years of the patient safety and quality improvement movement Dr. Berwick has been a voice of inspiration and a motivator to encourage institutions and individuals to forge a system that works better for all patients. Hear stories from Dr. Berwick as he illustrates how missteps over the years can teach us all important lessons that can help shape a better healthcare system for all.
Making History: How Patients and Families Changed the Patient Safety Movement
Keynote Two Description:
History is a fascinating collection of stories connecting human beings and experiences through time, often providing inspiration, but also revealing mistakes made that we hope never to repeat. We often refer to history to motivate a movement and to justify making changes for the better. In the early 1990’s patient safety was thrust into the spotlight forcing us to take a hard look at the problems facing our healthcare system, patients and families, and the workforce - thus today’s patient safety movement was formed. How did we get here, and where we do we go from here? During this session we will answer those questions by hearing from three patient safety luminaries who have been part of the movement since the beginning. They will share their unique experiences that helped to shape the movement and lead us in a discussion about how to continue on the right path forward, so we can look back in 20 years and ask: are patients safer than they were before?
Patient Safety Research: Insights from the Experts
Keynote Three Description:
The session will offer a rapid fire, yet in-depth look at the top patient safety research papers of 2016 and address how the evidence-based patient safety interventions and effective strategies identified in these papers can be translated into practice. Hear from 3 experts as they share what they see as the most influential work of that past year and how these findings can take patient safety to the next level.
Keynote Four Description:
